A total of 170 hours in theory and 1330 hours of practical work are required, for a grand total of 1500 clock hours.   Methods to be used for instruction include lecture, demonstration, and overhead projection of materials, CO-ROMs, PowerPoint, videos and activities that require student participation, discussion and review.

Executive Barber College does not offer courses on a pass/fail basis.

Barbering Course – Program Objectives

Students completing this program should:

  • Have knowledge of Mississippi State Laws concerning barbering.
  • Develop the skills necessary for haircutting, shaping, and coloring.
  • Know how to care for the scalp as well as the hair. Be aware of the hair and scalp structure and how to care for any disorders.
  • Have the skill to perform a professional manicure.
  • Have the skill to perform a professional shave.
  • Be aware of all sanitary procedures and strictly abide by them.
  • Be able to perform chemical solutions and coloring used on the hair.
  • Perform professional permanent waving techniques and applied chemistry.
  • Know the importance of projecting a professional image.
  • Have a working knowledge of salesmanship techniques.
  • Obtain sufficient knowledge to perform as a professional in the Barbering field.

Barber Instructor 600 Hours

Rule 3.1 Requirements

A. Any person to be qualified to receive a certificate of registration as a barber instructor must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older, must be of good moral and temperate habits, must be able to read, write and speak English; must possess a high school education or equivalent; must have successfully completed not less than fifteen hundred (1500) hours at a barbering school approved by the State Board of Barber Examiners; must hold a valid certificate of registration to practice barbering; must have not less than two (2) years of active experience

B. Instructors must be qualified to teach fundamentals of barbering and keep abreast of new trends and developments.

C. Faculty members must have personal characteristics conducive to effective teaching and exemplify desirable behavior (dress, habits, attitudes, and interpersonal relationships).

D. Instructor must file evidence every two years of having attended workshops, seminars, or formal classes relating to teaching or to new techniques in barbering.

Continuing education of 26 hours of approved credit per year is required.

Rule 3.2 Instructor’s Course of Study:

The instructor’s (600) hour course is recommended to be the following. All classes of barbering, including haircutting, must be conducted by a registered instructor. The applicant will provide the board with written evidence in the form of a diploma or similar
certificate of completion before the instructor examination is given.
